Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

RSV, or Respiratory Syncytial Virus, is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can be serious. Infants and older adults are more likely to develop severe RSV and need hospitalization.

Symptoms

People infected with RSV usually show symptoms within 4 to 6 days after getting infected. Symptoms of RSV infection usually include:

  • Runny nose
  • Decrease in appetite
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Fever
  • Wheezing

Prevention

  • Stay home when you’re sick
  • Cougher your cough and sneezes, not in your hands
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs and mobile devices

RSV immunizations are available for protection in some populations most at-risk including moms who are pregnant, babies and adults 50 years of age and older.
