According to the MN Department of Health, youth alcohol use has decreased over the last decade, from 17% in 2013 to 9% in 2022 (SUMN Web Site). In the 5-county region that Horizon Public Health serves, self-reported youth use of alcohol varies by county (see graph above).
However, alcohol is still the most used drug in the state (and US) overall. The use of alcohol can contribute to short- and long-term health and safety concerns. These include:
- Injuries or death due to alcohol-related accidents or violence
- Alcohol poisoning
- Poor birth outcomes if alcohol is used during pregnancy
- Poor school performance
- Poor judgement and decision-making
- Chronic diseases like heart disease, liver disease, digestive problems, and cancer
- Excessive drinking (aka binge drinking) can also lead to learning and memory problems, mental health problems, social issues, and alcohol dependence/addiction.
