Healthy Voices Healthy Choices Coalition

Coalition Background

The Healthy Voices Healthy Choices Coalition was formed in 2016 and has applied for continued funding through a Drug-Free Communities grant, which would begin in the summer of 2026. Currently, coalition activities are on pause, and there is no coordinator in place to lead the coalition.

The Healthy Voices Healthy Choices Coalition works to create an environment where it is easier for youth in the Alexandria area to make healthy choices regarding substance use. The two primary goals of the coalition are to reduce substance use among our youth and strengthen community collaboration. Healthy Voices Healthy Choices focuses on Alcohol, Tobacco/Nicotine, and Marijuana prevention. The coalition also works to address factors that can either positively or negatively influence youth to use alcohol and other drugs.

To meet these goals, the coalition focuses on the following activities: provide training and skill building to local businesses, educating parents and community members, reducing stigma related to substance misuse and mental health, empowering youth to make positive decisions, and promoting a sense of community whereas youth are valued contributing members of the community. The Coalition is forward thinking and willing to try new strategies and ideas to make positive community change.

MN Department of Health, youth alcohol use

According to the MN Department of Health, youth alcohol use has decreased over the last decade, from 17% in 2013 to 9% in 2022 (SUMN Web Site). In the 5-county region that Horizon Public Health serves, self-reported youth use of alcohol varies by county (see graph above).

However, alcohol is still the most used drug in the state (and US) overall. The use of alcohol can contribute to short- and long-term health and safety concerns. These include:

  • Injuries or death due to alcohol-related accidents or violence
  • Alcohol poisoning
  • Poor birth outcomes if alcohol is used during pregnancy
  • Poor school performance
  • Poor judgement and decision-making
  • Chronic diseases like heart disease, liver disease, digestive problems, and cancer
  • Excessive drinking (aka binge drinking) can also lead to learning and memory problems, mental health problems, social issues, and alcohol dependence/addiction.
