The American Red Cross “Sound the Alarm” – Smoke Alarm Initiative
July 3, 2025
The American Red Cross is on a mission to make every Minnesota home safer from the threat of fire. Every day, seven lives are lost in home fires across the U.S.—many in homes without working smoke alarms. To help prevent these tragedies, the Red Cross is working to ensure households have working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan.
Could You or Someone You Know Use a Smoke Alarm?
If you cannot afford a smoke alarm or are physically unable to install one, the Red Cross may be able to help — free of charge. Trained volunteers will come to your home to:
- Install smoke alarms
- Replace batteries in existing alarms
- Help your family create a two-minute fire escape plan
- Provide tips to reduce fire risks in your home
This initiative is part of the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which aims to reduce fire-related injuries and deaths by making sure every household has the tools and knowledge to respond safely.
